Everyday Life & Observations in Digby & Area

Where is Digby, Nova Scotia?

on August 10, 2012

With a population of 2,092 Digby is a waterfront community (a shiretown or county seat) overlooking the picturesque Annapolis Basin on the western shore near the entrance to the Digby Gut which connects the basin to the Bay of Fundy.

The area was settled in June 1783 by the United Empire Loyalists under the leadership of Sir Robert Digby. In the 19th century, Digby developed a sizable shipping fleet. The town also became an important regional transportation centre in the 1890’s with the arrival of the Dominion Atlantic Railways.

The town’s history is preserved at the Admiral Digby Museum, located in a historic home on main street facing the harbour.

Digby is home to the “World Famous” Digby scallops from the rich ecosystem of the Bay which provides spectacular viewing of the incredible tides (27ft. to 32ft.) in the harbour.

There is also a ferry service connecting Digby to Saint John, New Brunswick.

The new 7 Wonders of Nature campaign, originally with 440 entries, is down to 28 finalists with the Bay of Fundy one of two entries left in all of North America. The Bay of Fundy is known for having the highest tidal range in the world. As indicated in the Guinness Book of World Records (1975):

“The Natural World, Greatest Tides: The greatest tides in the world occur in the Bay of Fundy…. Burntcoat Head in the Minas Basin, Nova Scotia, has the greatest mean spring range with 14.5 metres (47.5 feet) and an extreme range of 16.3 metres (53.5 feet).”

This weekend, Digby will host the 37th annual Scallop Days festival, bringing the fishing and tourism industries together to showcase the town’s history. The festival includes a parade, various vendors, scallop shucking contests and, of course, Digby scallops. We have never shucked a scallop so competing is out this year…..but who knows….maybe next year!

But our favourite part of the day is going back home…….

And enjoying the beautiful sunsets in our own backyard!

Cheers everyone!
